The exhibition focuses on early works of Jiří Černický, which uncover the wish to connect science with other modes of perception or even other states of consciousness. The intertwining of rational and irrational steps, led by different transformation processes, inform us about the imperfection of one-sided knowledge. Illustrating that, without active and physical entry of the subject into the researched field there is no complex knowledge possible and that the world is more complex and interwoven than we could ever imagine. This early body of work is strongly marked by historical absence of the internet and Wikipedia, it’s essentially bound to the place of his birth and youth, Ústí nad Labem. Here the specific connection of toxic and natural environment helped to complete Černický’s ambivalently romantic relationship to science and ecology, that was, and still is distant from ecologists and scientists. Documentations of his early works, also became documentations of the natural-chemical surface coal mining; which strongly impacted the region’s environment at the dawn of the state controlled privatisation.
Jiří Černický, as much as his own work, is an author of contradictions that have their own meaning and are connected via complicated ethical legacy. Černický often mixes; objective information with fictive constructed facts, distance with direct interventions, modern heroism with postmodern fluidity, science with emotions. Entering the art scene in the early 1990s his works stem from early performances and happenings, to later his science-political-poetical videos, objects and installations, as well as his continuous reflexion of painting as a medium, represents a major contribution to this body.
